Bushfire evacuation kit

If a bushfire is threatening your home or property, it’s too late to think about what you and your family will do. Prepare a bushfire evacuation kit before it's too late.

Your bushfire evacuation kit should have enough supplies for everyone.

Packing your bushfire evacuation kit

Your kit should include:

  •  Protective clothing for each person:
    • Long sleeve shirt (made of natural fibres)
    • Jeans or long pants (made of natural fibres)
    • Boots
    • Hat
    • Safety glasses
  • Drinking water and food
  • First aid kit
  • Medications and prescriptions
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Torch (battery powered or wind-up)
  • Spare batteries – don’t leave batteries in your torch or radio and check them every six months
  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Wool blankets (for fire protection)
  • Important documents such as insurance and home ownership papers – consider using a USB or cloud storage for digital copies
  • Drivers licenses, passports and birth certificates
  • Wallets and purses
  • Family photos and valuables.

Keep your evacuation kit in a waterproof storage container and in a location that is easy to get to and that the whole family knows about. This will make it quick and easy to find.

Pets

Remember to prepare your pets as well. Make sure your pet is microchipped or wearing an identification tag.

Add the following pet supplies to your evacuation kit:

  • carriers/lead
  • food and water
  • medication
  • toys or bedding.

Practice how to pack the car

Make sure your evacuation kit can be packed quickly, everything fits in the car, and there is enough space for your pets.
