Acting Deputy Commissioner Michael O’Neil commenced his firefighting career in 1994 and has served most of his career in North Queensland.  During this time, he has gained expertise in a variety of specialist areas, along with extensive knowledge, skills and experience in emergency and crisis management unique to the region.

From 2017, Michael relieved in the role of Assistant Commissioner repeatedly, before taking on the role permanently in June 2022. 

Michael previously acted in the Deputy Commissioner, Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) position in 2025 and has now returned to the role until a recruitment process is finalised.

Michael has held a diverse range of operational and leadership roles across Queensland Fire Department and has led organisational initiatives and change processes throughout his career. 

He has led disaster assistance response teams during major disasters in Queensland including Cyclone Larry in 2006, Cyclone Yasi in 2011, Cyclone Debbie in 2017, the North Queensland monsoon event in 2019 and Cyclone Kirrily in 2024. He has also held key roles in Regional Coordination Centres.

Michael is passionate about strengthening capability across QFR and creating opportunities for staff development and growth.
