Smoke from Orpheus Island National Park

3/12/2012 7:10:13 AM

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has been advised: The Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing (NPRSR) will be conducting a planned burn on Monday 3 December 2012 at Orpheus Island National Park as part of its conservation management program for the park.

As a result, smoke may be seen between Halifax Bay and Hinchinbrook Island.

Planned burns such as this are vitally important. The NPRSR conducts burns for protection of the community (life and property) by decreasing potential wildfire risks later in the year, as well as for the management of natural ecosystems.

The burns will help provide conditions that assist with grassland regeneration on Orpheus Island, and maintain open woodland areas.

Planned burns will be undertaken in favourable weather conditions, to minimise smoke impacts to residents in the area.
