The new directions for Queensland firefighter competitions endorsed by Commissioner Lee Johnson AFSM has achieved benefits across Queensland. Enhanced interest and a significant growth in the number of teams contesting regional firefighter championships is a measure of success. Regional management's commitment to support firefighter competitions and to build station and rural brigade involvement is viewed as a means to enhance the operational skills of all Queensland firefighters. With competition expanded in 2003 to include all QFRS full-time, auxiliary and volunteer operational firefighters, Regional Firefighter Competitions Coordination Committees are committed to increasing team participation for annual competitions. The aim of our firefighter competitions is to provide opportunity for regional teams to enhance their operational firefighting skills through competition, training, and community safety activities. Teams that participate in firefighter competitions have trained extensively, developed their firefighting skills, built teamwork and demonstrated a determination to succeed. These are qualities the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service seeks to develop in all Queensland firefighters. The tradition of competition amongst firefighters has been established over several decades with teams across Queensland annually competing against each other in operational scenarios to determine the champion team. Under the State format, teams contesting their Regional Firefighter Championship can progress to the Queensland Firefighter Championship conducted annually. Now, Queensland champion teams have an opportunity to contest the biennial Australasian Firefighter Championship. QFRS Queensland Firefighter Competition Committee: The QFRS Queensland Firefighter Competition Committee (QFCC) has the responsibility to develop and implement policy on firefighter competitions in accordance with guidance and direction from the QFRS Senior Executive Management Team. The 'New Directions' strategy introduced in 2003 has seen a major shift in the focus for firefighter competitions. The QFCC also provides advice and logistics support to Regions in the staging of their annual Regional Firefighter Championship, and works closely with that year's Region hosting the annual Queensland Firefighter Championship. A dynamic committee, membership reflects regional participation aligned to the annual QFRS Regional and Queensland Firefighter Championships, and includes key stakeholder representatives. |
