Overview
Telstra have announced that from December 2009 they will be no longer connecting or maintaining the voice grade digital lines (VGDL) that connect building fire alarm devices to the QFRS fire alarm monitoring service (FireNET).
As a result of the VGDL decommissioning, the current Premise Protection Units (PPU) that connects building fire alarm panels to FireNET will become obsolete.
The Commissioner, QFRS has established a dedicated Fire Alarm Project Team that is reviewing and testing alternative technologies that will replace the current PPU devices. The replacement solution will be compatible with a range of Telco carrier formats such as Internet and mobile technologies. All existing FireNET customers will receive correspondence from the Commissioner in late November 2007. Please click here to view the Commissioner’s letter.
An alternative technology will be selected in early 2008 with the replacement of PPU devices to commence in July 2008. At this stage the project has not developed a schedule of replacement however you will receive several months advance warning when your PPU device will be replaced by the QFRS which will be completed in conjunction with your external fire alarm contractor.
