Bushfire Prepared Communities
When bushfire threatens your home, the big question you will face is: “should I stay and defend my property or go early?” Points to consider before you make your decision:
- You need to prepare to “stay and defend” your property or “go early” before the bushfire season.
- Homes where adequate preparation has been made can survive the initial passage of bushfire.
- Homes have a greater chance of survival where people remain to extinguish small fires.
- People who are well prepared can shelter in their homes and have an excellent chance of surviving.
- Experience has shown that most homes are destroyed as a result of sparks and embers.
- Burning embers can travel many kilometres from the fire front.
- Your house does not have to butt directly up against bush land to be at risk.
- Most people who die in bushfires leave it too late to leave.
- Make sure that your decision is flexible enough to deal with changed circumstances – e.g. school holidays, visitors, work commitments, etc.
Whichever you decide, remember, preparing your property before the bushfire season * begins is essential. - Preparing your property - Stay and defend - Go early - Bushfire |
