Brisbane Region
The Brisbane Region covers approximately 5,160 square kilometres and includes the local government areas of Brisbane, Caboolture, Kilcoy, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe and Redlands. The Region extends north to include the areas of Dayboro and Kilcoy, east along the coastline to Bribie Island, south to incorporate North Stradbroke and Coochiemudlo Islands, and the western suburbs of Oxley and Mount Ommaney.
There are 36 urban fire stations in the Brisbane Region and 792 full-time and 123 Auxiliary fire officers staff them. The Region is divided into seven operational command and their headquarters are at Caboolture, Petrie, Hendra, Roma Street, Kemp Place, Durack and Cleveland.
Firecom Brisbane mobilises the operational crews of the Brisbane Region’s fire stations for the emergency incidents occurring in the Brisbane Region from the Communications Centre at Spring Hill. It also mobilises the operational crews of the Ipswich and Gatton Areas in the South Eastern Region.
One District Inspector based in Morayfield and 96 rural fire brigades services rural fire management and suppression in the Region. The Southern Regional Rural Office is located in Redcliffe.
Major features of the Region encompass the Port of Brisbane, Brisbane Airport, and Brisbane Central Business District, major sporting venues, tertiary hospitals, university campuses, large shopping centres and entertainment centres. The Region is also a critical transport node characterised by congested inner city roads, arterial road hotspots and single egress locations.
The 1.3 million people living in the Brisbane Region represent 36% of the total Queensland population. The median age of the population in Brisbane is 36.5 years and 11.7% of persons are aged 65 and over.
Of all the businesses in Queensland there are 32.4% in the Brisbane Region. An industry breakdown profile of the various businesses in the Brisbane Region is as follows: Property and Business Services 22.1%; Retail Trade 16.3%; Construction 10.8%; Wholesale Trade 9.2%; and, Health and Community Services 8.6%.
There is widespread recognition by the staff in the Brisbane Region of the value of employing measures and mitigation strategies to minimise the likelihood and impact of emergencies and disasters, and to build the capacity of communities to respond appropriately at times of emergencies and disaster. Therefore, goals and strategies of the operational services will also focus on the delivery of effective prevention and community safety education programs.

Ian Mitchell
Ian commenced his fire service career in 1973 as a firefighter with the City of Wellington Fire Brigade, New Zealand. He became a Station Officer with the New Zealand Fire Service in 1979 and worked his way through the ranks of the NZFS until he was appointed Assistant Area Chief Fire Officer, Eastern North Island in 1995.
Ian joined the Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority in 1998 as Manager, Strategic Development for Central Region, before being promoted in November 2001 to Assistant Commissioner, Central Region. In 2003 Ian was appointed as Assistant Commissioner of the South Eastern Region and Assistant Commissioner of Brisbane in 2006.
Ian is a graduate and member of the Institute of Fire Engineers, has a Post Graduate Certificate in Applied Management AIPM (Sturt University).
