South Western Region
About the Region
South Western region runs from Toowoomba in the east, west to the South Australian border and south to the New South Wales border. The region's major city is Toowoomba with most of the population concentrated in the eastern part of the region with the western areas more sparsely populated.
South Western Region has the highest percentage of auxiliary (part-time) firefighters working alongside full-time staff, with 463 auxiliaries and 100 full time firefighters at 42 urban fire stations.
Toowoomba is the base for the region's headquarters and Fire Communications Centre.
The QFRS South Western Region's extensive training complex is also located in this centre, which incorporates the state's first confined space training facility, and trains permanent and auxiliary firefighters from across the entire Region.

Regional Training
Regional training provides comprehensive training to all 42 stations in the region, ranging from road accident rescue and hazardous materials management, to competency maintenance programs.
We have numerous training facilities, including a world class confined space training facility, the first of it's kind in Queensland. The facility encompasses a range of simulated underground storm water pipes and a grain silo used for on-farm rescue training.
Community Safety Unit
Located in Toowoomba, the Community Safety Unit, provides promotional services, building survey advice and equipment to the stations within the region for educational purposes.
The unit manages a range of community safety projects for the region, and promotes the various activities of the QFRS, such as:
- The very successful, Road Awareness and Accident Prevention (RAAP),
- Safehome, and
- Fight Fire Fascination programs.
The Unit is currently involved in a regional awareness campaign involving all emergency services agencies and community groups in a combined "Triple 0 Show" held at fire stations randomly across the South West.
