Office of the Deputy Commissioner
The Deputy Commissioner reports directly to the Commissioner and is responsible for managing all operational aspects of the QFRS including risk and planning; special operations, operational equipment, engineering, research and development and Project Management.
Deputy Commissioner Iain Mackenzie
Iain commenced with the fire service in 1981. Iain was first promoted to a Senior Officer within the State Training Division in 1993 and then moved to operational Area Command roles in Ipswich and Beenleigh before becoming the Manager Strategic Development for the South Eastern Region.
He was first appointed to an executive role in the South Eastern Region, in July 2001 and subsequently transferred to the position of Assistant Commissioner for the newly formed Brisbane Region in August 2002.
Iain was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal in January 2006 and promoted to the position of Deputy Commissioner in March the same year.
Iain holds a Masters Degree in Leadership and Management (Policing), is a graduate of the Institute of Fire Engineers and is a past president of the Queensland Branch of the Institute. He has attended the United States National Fire Academy, Executive Fire Officer Program, and has presented at National and International conferences, including the Virginia State Fire Chiefs Conference in 2003 and AFAC conference of 2005 in New Zealand.
