Auxiliary Firefighters
Auxiliary firefighters provide an efficient and effective service to Queensland communities in the preservation of life, property and the environment. They undertake almost all of the same functions as permanent career firefighters including containment of structural and environmental fires, motor vehicle entrapment, chemical spills, technical rescue, building compliance inspections and community education.
Auxiliary firefighters are unique from career firefighters in that they are on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Many hold regular jobs as farmers, tradespeople and factory or office workers. With their employer’s permission, they stop work and attend to emergency incidents as they occur. This round-the-clock role also relies heavily on the patience and support of their family and social circles.
These invaluable members of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service are paid by the hour to attend to emergency incidents as well as participate in weekly skill maintenance drills, regular structured training exercises and other approved QFRS activities.

Locations
Auxiliary firefighters are integral members of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and are located throughout Queensland. The majority are located at stations crewed entirely by auxiliary firefighters. Depending on their location, auxiliary firefighters may also work together with career or rural volunteer firefighters in the provision of fire and rescue services.
Firefighter Competitions
The tradition of competition amongst QFRS auxiliary firefighters has been established over several decades. As early as 1930, a limited number of localised teams from various fire brigades throughout Queensland have competed against each other.
The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has formalised a standard approach to firefighter competitions by recognising regional and state competitions as a major strategy for improving the core firefighting and teamwork skills of firefighters. Queensland Firefighter Competitions provide the incentive and challenge for all firefighters to strive for recognition, not only as the QFRS champion team, but as individuals for the particular year.
In 2003 the competition was expanded to include all QFRS operational firefighters – permanent, auxiliary & volunteer.
Competition Aims:
- To develop and maintain operational firefighting skills of firefighters;
- To encourage camaraderie between firefighters from various stations, brigades and regions throughout Queensland in a friendly competitive atmosphere;
- To promote a positive image of the QFRS and firefighter to the public;
- To promote pride and self-esteem through team work and individual performance;
- To foster an awareness that firefighters are an integral part of the QFRS in addition to representing their local community;
- To promote fire safety awareness and public education within the community;
- To provide opportunity to progress to the National Firefighter Championships.
